About
The Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) is Spain’s largest public research institution and ranks fourth among Europe’s largest research organisations. CSIC participates through the Instituto de Tecnología Química (ITQ), a joint research Centre founded in 1990 by the CSIC and the UPV. It is an international reference center in the areas of catalysis, new materials, electrochemistry, green chemistry, photochemistry, gas separation and energy conversion. The Energy Conversion and Storage Group is a multidisciplinary team working on heterogeneous catalysis, catalytic membrane reactors, process intensification, membrane technology, electrochemical conversion and energy storage. Besides the experimental lab capabilities, ITQ’s possess huge expertise also in CFD modelling and process validation covering techno-economic assessments key for the further development of the proposed technology.
Role in the project
CSIC leads the electrochemical materials activities for SOEC development, focusing on MEA design and scale-up, including the selection of electrode and electrolyte materials, advanced fabrication processes and structural, morphological, and electrochemical characterisation. CSIC also supports the project through SOEC engineering, prototype construction, validation, and performance assessment, contributing to process modelling and digital twin development, iterative technology improvement and heat recovery design, prototype manufacturing and testing, industrial implementation and commissioning, real-environment validation, and techno-economic assessment.
